Usually it's very nice new cut off pieces of floor boards from B and Q, which is how I think my crucifix started out! And I always have cuts and splinters in my fingers! I think it's fantastic that you use driftwood and make your own bits and pieces, and yes, you are right it makes everything far more personal than if, like me, it's shop bought most of the time.
